XLVI Ticket Price Post Mortem: Get-in 54% less than XLV. Price dropped 32% in 5 days before game
on February 6th, 2012
Tags: New England Patriots, New York Giants, NFL, Super Bowl XLVI
Super Bowl XLVI lived up to the all hype and then some as the Giants and Patriots faced off in another classic. Four years removed from their 17-14 win in Super Bowl XLII, the Giants once again got the best of Brady and the Pats, this time winning 21-17.
Based on the above chart, fans that waited to buy until the last minute were rewarded with bargains. The get-in price dropped over 56% in the 5 days leading up to XLVI with the average price dropping 32%. At game-time, upper level seats were selling for right around $1,000, which was 56% below the get-in price last year.
For XLV, Steelers and Packer fans alike flocked to Dallas. This year, however, interest was lopsided. In the days leading up to the game, we saw 500% more traffic from the Tri-State area than from Massachusetts. Perhaps it was the shorter drive (12 hrs vs. 15 hrs), or just a case of championship fatigue in Boston (poor Bostonians), but Patriots fans were significantly less interested in the game than Giants fans.
As for the most active buying windows, we saw 61% of tickets sell in the 5 days after teams were set and 27% in the 48 hours before the event. Because so many brokers attend the Super Bowl themselves, last minute logistics were easy to manage.
We’re already looking forward to The Big Easy in 2013, and can’t wait for opening kick-off in September.

Giants-Pats Rematch is the Hottest Super Bowl Ticket in Three Years
on January 23rd, 2012

After a Sunday of drama-filled Conference Championships, the Super Bowl XLVI match up is set, and the New York Giants and New England Patriots are headed to Indianapolis. Behind two memorable kicks, the New York-Boston rivalry is set for another epic installment.
In all their excitement about this Super Bowl XLII rematch, fans and sellers have made the 2012 edition the most expensive Super Bowl in three years. In the 12 hours after the Giants won the NFC, prices climbed 8% alone. At a whopping $4,020 average price, prices are 10% higher than last year’s Packers-Steelers game in Dallas, and 72% more than 2010’s Saints-Colts match up in Miami. With 30,000+ less seats available at Lucas Oil Stadium than Cowboys stadium, we don’t much price softening this year leading up to the game.
Prices range from $2,298 for 22 rows back in the 600s corner section, to $14,707 for 1st row seats at the 50. There’s even an $600,000 luxury suite available, which is roughly the same price as a 5,000 SF mansion in Indianapolis. For those not looking to take out a mortgage to attend this years Super Bowl, the get-in price of $2,298 is currently just over last-year’s get-in of $2,260.
As for the other ticket you’ll need to get to Indy, flights from NYC and Boston have gone up over 250% in the last week, according to Bing Travel, and both routes will cost above $1,000 for a round-trip, coming back Monday. The good news is that Bing predicts both will come down between $100 and $400, with confidence rating above 75%, so hold tight if you dare. As for the last piece of the equation–a room–there is little chance of finding a hotel at this late stage, however, there are 13 listings on Craigslist Indianapolis that range from $400/night up to $4,000 per night. If none of those work out, however, you can always see if the person buying the $600,000 suite has any extra floor space where you can crash.

NFC Crushes AFC in Conference Championships Price Battle
on January 18th, 2012
Tags: Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, New York Giants, NFL, NFL Playoffs, San Francisco 49ers
It’s been 14 years since the 49ers last played in the NFC Championship game and, as a result, tickets for this weekend’s game are in very high demand. The Giants-49ers game is currently selling at a 451% premium to the 49ers regular season average. Fans in New England, on the other hand, are used to January Football, and are only paying a 60% premium.

Perhaps part of the 7x Niners premium has to do with the fact that San Franciscans were not expecting another home game. When the Giants pulled off the upset in Lambeau, though, fans got an unexpected opportunity to see the Niners play at home for a trip to the SuperBowl. After the Giants win, the average price jumped up to an average of $657. In the last 4 days, the price has come down to $639, or 61% higher than the AFC Championship game in New England.
After the Giants won, over 8,000 tickets flooded the market for the NFC Championship. However, in the last several days ticket have been selling quickly, and there are now under 2,400 left. For the AFC championship, less than 750 tickets are available.
If you’re looking ahead to the next step for your team, SuperBowl tickets are also available. Currently, the average price is $4,035, and you can get-in for $2,350. As the below chart illustrates, though, the market has fluctuated quite a bit over the last week and quantity is up almost 5x since the end of the divisional round. There are currently almost 1,700 tickets available. While already mortgage-payment expensive, the fact that the Packers—the only team within driving distance of Indianapolis—will not have a chance to defend their title may be keeping prices a bit lower for now.

Giants vs. Packers drive NYC-MIL plane tickets up 322%. Game Tickets down 33%
on January 13th, 2012
Tags: Green Bay Packers, New York Giants, NFC Playoffs, NFL, NFL Playoffs
At TiqIQ we are in the business of tracking ticket prices to your favorite events, and this week’s Giants Playoff game is no different. Tickets for the divisional match-up in Green Bay are down 21% this week, and have fallen 33% in the last three days. For value hunters, there are now deals popping up (especially eBay) close to the $100 mark.
So while demand for this game is relatively low as far as Packer fans go, Giants’ fans appear to be taking advantage of the cheap deals. Since their win over the Falcons, plane tickets from NYC to MIL have spiked 322%. As of 2pm ET today, the cheapest fair to get to Milwaukee is $328, or 46% more than the game average of $225.
Prior to the Giants win, a plane ticket would have cost you less than a game ticket, and we’re sure a few of the true believers took advantage of the opportunity to book a flight. For those that did, an epic weekend awaits. For those that didn’t, the cheapest fare next weekend to New Orleans and San Fran are $288 and $320, respectively. Bing Travel says that ticket prices to New Orleans will drop while prices to San Fran are going up.
For true believers, we recommend keeping a close watch on airfares Saturday during the Saints-Niners game. As for game tickets, the average price for the NFC Championship in New Orleans is $875 vs. $679 in San Francisco. If you want to make a bet on game tickets, you can always resell them, potentially for a profit. As a company interested in tickets and free markets, we’ve always thought that it would be interesting if you could do the same for plane tickets. Security concerns, however, make that an impossibility. Instead, just make sure you’ve got a 24-hour window to cancel your flight, or as an alternative, stay home and save up for the most important game of all in Indianapolis on February 5th.

Texans Fans Paying Highest Premium This Wild Card Weekend
on January 3rd, 2012
Tags: Devner Broncos, Houston Texans, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, NFL, NFL Playoffs
While the NFL playoffs is always reason for excitement amongst fans, for this weekend’s wild cards weekend, Texans fans are most excited of all. To calculate excitement, we look at the premium–% above regular season average–for each game.
As shown above, everything is bigger in Texas, including the Texas-sized premium of 128% for Saturday’s Texans-Bengals game. It has been almost 20 years since an NFL playoff game in Houston, and in a state as football-crazed as Texas, the premium comes as no surprise. At an average price of $324, it’s actually the 2nd least expensive game the schedule, ahead of only Sunday’s Broncos-Steelers game, which has an average of $274. Given the this season’s Tebow Mania, the relatively low price for this game does come as a bit of a surprise. In fact, it is only 29% above the season average, and less expensive than the two regular season games against the Bears and Patriots. With struggles and losses in the last three games, it seems that Broncos’ fans belief in Tebow has waned enough to bring prices back to earth.
The two NFC match ups are this weekend’s most expensive games. At $361 per seat, the Giants-Falcons tops the list, with Lions at Saints right behind at $337 per. Both teams, however, had two of the highest regular season home averages so the premium their fans will be paying this weekend is nowhere near that of the fans Texas.
