Knicks Ticket Prices Drop As Team Struggles

The chart above begins on March 5th, one day after the Knicks 3rd loss of the season to the Cavs. Obviously, that didn’t sit too well with the Knicks faithful as all three games this week started heading south immediately after.
1
Even with the struggles, the Knicks are a virtual lock for their first playoff appearance since the 2003 – 2004 season and there’s no reason for Knicks fans to give up hope now. If you would like to attend any of these games, for significantly less than you would have had to pay a couple weeks ago, ck here.

New York Basketball Back in the Spotlight @ MSG

New York basketball junkies who have gone without for the better part of Ten years are finally getting their fix. The Knicks have reasserted their relevance and The Big East Tournament in full swing, with St. Johns amongst the top seeds.
1
For most of the 20th Century, Madison Square Garden was referred to as ‘The Mecca of Basketball’ by fans and players alike, and it was a moniker that no one questioned. Since the dawn of the 21st century, however, that title has seemed outdated and more warm memory than reality.
1
With the amount of quality basketball there is to see at MSG over the next 10 days, the Mecca has reemerged as a shrine for basketball devotees; and they are showing their fervor by driving up average prices to levels that can pay rent if you choose to watch from the couch instead. For many, though, the allure of afternoon doubleheaders and marquee prime-time matchups is too great to resist.

While the next ten days at MSG are a clear sign of rebirth, the basketball renaissance in New York runs deeper. This year, four teams from the New York Metropolitan area–St. John’s, St. Peter’s, Stony Brook and LI– have a chance to make it to the Dance. If one of those teams can make a magical run, it would be the first New York Metro team to make the Final Four since St. Johns did so in 1985, and the first team to win the championship since 1950 when City College of New York won at the old Madison Square Garden.
1
Right now, The Johnnies are a 40/1 long shot to win the tournament, so while we won’t likely see a New York champion in 2011, the next month should go a long way toward re-establishing basketball in the heart of New York sports fans. More importantly, it may also generate enough interest amongst young athletes to drive a new generation of native stars in a city with a rich, if somewhat dated, hardwood pedigree.

A Tale of Two Game Trends: Knicks-Heat Edition

LeBron James and the Miami Heat head back to MSG tonight for the second matchup against the Knicks, and tickets are selling for less than half of first MSG match-up in December.
1
The first matchup in December was a highly anticipated circus, and a dramatic coda to The Decision. New Yorker’s don’ t like to be spurned, and so they did all they could to pay up and show LeBron what he was missing. The average price for that game were close $750 a ticket, with a 50% increase coming in the 3 days prior. After all that build-up, and cash, a tight first half turned into a blowout for the Heat.
1
Since the first meeting, the Heat have gone from relative underachievers to beasts that are living up to the pre-season billing as favorites in the East. The Knicks, on the other hand, have lost six of seven, and some of the season’ s early optimism.

1
For tonight’s game, the Heat is favored by only three points and the average price currently sits just above $324. While it’s a fire sale compared to game one, this is still 50% above the Knicks home average of $212, and over 3 times the average face price for the game. And despite the 50% drop in the last week, it will likely be one of the ten most expensive regular season tickets in New York for 2011. In recent memory, the Knicks have not been able to make that claim often, if ever.
1
If the Knicks can figure out a way to take down the Heat, it will be money well spent for fans (especially those that snag a 300- or 400-level, which start at $64 and $100 respectively). If they lose, fans can take some measure of solace in the fact that they still have a winging record, a legitimate face for the franchise, and if the season ended today, a spot in the playoffs.
1
Despite those strides, however, others will argue 6th, 7th or 8th in East is meaningless, and that without Carmelo Anthony the Knicks have no chance of playing May basketball. If he does find his way to the World’ s Most Famous Arena before the February 24th deadline, the circus would be back at the Garden for an extended stay and the Knicks current home average of $212 will seem like a quaint memory.

The World’s First Ever TiqSim, from TiqIQ and OperationSports

To a sports fan, seeing the thrill of victory in person is the ultimate reward. Unfortunately, not every game turns out the way you want it to. If you’d prefer to avoid that 9-3 loss in 20 degree weather or that 7-1 blowout, TiqIQ and OperationSports are introducing TiqSims to help.  In addition to providing you all the data you need to get the best deal, we’ll be running game simulations on the biggest games of the week.  We hope this gives you a better idea of what you’re getting in return for your hard-earned dollars.
1
Our inaugural TiqSim takes place at the Worlds Most Famous Arena— Madison Square Garden—and features two of the NBA’s biggest stars: Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James.  Game one features The Nuggets vs. Knicks on Sunday, 12/12 and Game two features The Heat vs. Knicks on Friday, 12/17.   Over the last year, Knicks fans have spent a lot of energy wondering if ‘Bron and Melo would end up in Orange and Blue.  Now they get the chance to root against them and see if their 15-9 Knicks can continue their hot play against two elite teams.
1
According to our TiqSims, both games will come down to the wire.  Not surprisingly, both Anthony and James have huge games.  Unfortunately for Knicks fans, both games end up going against the home team. Because of the relative value of the Nuggets/Knicks game (19% below Knicks home avg.), we give it a TiqSim rating of 9.  Because of the astronomical price for Knicks/Heat (232% above Knicks home avg.), we give it a rating of 8. With dramatic finishes and the mega star wattage on display, however, these are both games you’ll be talking about for weeks, if not years, to come.

Deal Tips

Nuggets/Knicks, 12/12.
With less than 24 hours to Knicks/Nuggets, prices remain 19% below the Knicks $156 home average and 9% above their $138 day-game average. As a result, there are some great deals, especially in TiqZone 300’s Corner where prices are down 38% over the last week and there are still over 300 tickets available.

Heat/Knicks, 12/17.
As for the Heat game on Friday night, this is as big, and expensive as it gets. At an average price of $518, tickets are selling for 232% more than the Knicks season average, and should remain very high all the way to gameday. While the best deal on the board is around $140, quantity remains very high, with over 6,000 tickets available. With only 6 days until the game, if tickets don’t move, prices could drop as much as 25%, especially in TiqZones with the largest amount of inventory, like 300’s and 400’s Corner. Keep your eyes peeled.
