No player who hits .270 and is lonsig a step defensively at shortstop deserves $18 million a year.Take names completely out of it and just look at production, he’s a $5 to $8 million a year player, at most. Bottom line, he got paid for the sum total of his career and what he’s done for the Yankees over the last 15 years, not for his current ability. Which is why no other team would even come close to the deal he got with the Yankees, they don’t give a rat’s ass what he did over the course of his career because it wasn’t with them. For the other teams it was all about what can you do for me now? and the answer to that question was worth about $5 million a year, not $18 million. Derek Jeter should thank his lucky stars that the MLB salary structure is the most f’ed up in all of pro sports, because God forbid he actually got paid what he was really worth. I doubt his ego could survive living off of 1/3 of $18 million a year
